Steering Pitman arm/linkage below oil pan
« on: January 17, 2010 - 03:46:31 PM »
I'm need to take the sump pan off my 440 RB engine in my Challenger. I've managed to take off all of the 1/2 inch bolts off around the sump, even the ones shrouded by the K frame. I've taken the cotter pins off and the castled nuts of the piman arm but am unable to seperate this lnkage off.
 :working:

i've used a fork type seperator and (and pretty much ruined the bushes) and hit it hard but it's still not seperated.
I've also tried a gear type puller- but still no success. :pullinghair:

Any one got any reccomendations? Any tools I should look into? Am I doing it wrong?

If that 3 lever puller is holding good, get it real tight and wop the center link right at the puller with your hammer. You are doing all the right stuff. Bullitt has a set of front end pullers that work like a charm. He got them at advance for around 100 bucks.

Thank you Moparal.
I may have to go out and buy some more/better tools.
The 2 legged puller photographed subsides and collapses when the pressure is exerted. May be I need one with a thicker stem.
I'll go to advance like you suggest. Thanks

Sometimes you have to use a "mini" sledge hammer to make that pickle fork work.

I bought a tie-rod puller from O'Reilly for $12.  You can get a pitman puller just about anywhere for $15'ish.  Skip the rest of the kit.

PB Blaster down each tapered shaft, let sit over night. Next day wack the center link ends, not the pitman or idler shafts, a few times with a medium sized ball pein with another hammer or dolly on the other side to break the hold. Try the puller.  Repeat until it lets go.

You can pick up that front end kit at Advance Auto or Auto Zone from their Loan-A-Tool program...leave a deposit that is 100% refundable.    Also has an excellent puller for rear yokes.
