Bank robbing is a felony.

Unless you have proof that the car is a full rebody or someone robbed a bank what is the piont of stating the law here?
My point exactly.  Heck, let's just go into everyone's restoration thread and post "Moving VINs is a felony", just so everyone knows, like we haven't heard it over and over again.  Do we know it's a "grey" area?  Who has seen the restoration documents, or talked to the owner, or to the seller?

at what point do we enter and exit grey?

black:  a car is stolen, and the VIN is replaced with a VIN from a totaled car.  yeah, for sure a bad thing here.  :nono:

white: you are restoring your car, and you replace both rear quarters, both front fenders, and maybe a few other odds and ends.  this is not a bad thing, you are restoring your classic e-body.  :woo:

grey  :dunno::  now that most of the major sheet metal is being restamped, and your rust bucket needs those parts, you go ahead and replace everything, but you keep the radiator support, data plate, the cowl, and the VIN tag.

or

you find a rust free donor car, and use it to replace the body that you rolled when the tire blew and you were doing 90mph, keeping the radiator support, data plate, the cowl and the VIN tag.

or

all you have is a VIN you bought off e-bay, and you get someone to make a data plate, and take a donor car and apply them to that and pass it off.

somewhere in that grey area, we probably have seen some degree of shadiness,  at the end of the day it is Caveat Emptor, LEt the buyer beware.  hopefully, if you are plunking down $87,000 you have done some homework.

seems to me, for "only" $87k, they knew the car has problems. If it were all "real" it would have fetched a lot more.

F-it guys, I really don't care.  :dunno:

I will say that I wouldn't hesitate to throw a repro cowl on a car, it seems kind of crazy to let something go just b/c the piece of sheet metal needing replaced has numbers stamped. Sh!t, guys throw whole cabs on 61-71 trucks, and nothing is stamped.

Because moving them and keeping a car until death is one thing, but when you are "grey" in this area when selling a car for this much is most certainly bad.

 :chatting:

Everyone will die someday and then the car is sold so why is that OK?

Like I said. And by the way, I wasn't talking about just moving the tag over, that would never be ok.  :screwy:

wally,

you are taking this way too seriously... but wait, i think i see that two of the lug nuts, and one wiper blade is factory original, so it won't be a total VIN swap... (might even could save a side marker light!)

(work with me here, this will be my 98th post....only two more to get to 100!!!     )

Then there's me and a few other guys on this board who are saving "Stampings" and "Vin Tags" from the "Great Beyond".  :angelwings: Should we call the hulk hauler to come get our projects?  :dunno:  :clueless:
