Wet RTV on both sides tries to squeeze out my gaskets.
Here is how I do mine.
First I flatten the bolt holes so that they aren't deformed.
I clean off both surfaces with brake cleaner, then use a scotchbrite pad to rough them up a little.
I completely cover the pan with RTV, align the gasket, then put it on the bench to dry face down with some weight on it.
The next day, coat the other side of the gasket with RTV then install it ALWAYS starting with the center bolts and going out.
I've had better luck with the cork style gaskets but have never had either type leak.
