Growling speedometer..how to repair ?
« on: February 06, 2010 - 01:58:31 PM »
Hello all,
All of a sudden last week my speedo started growling. I replaced the original about 9 months ago(used unit)for the same thing and all was fine until this one started the act. Unplugged it until a fix can be made, seat of the pants mph for now..
Does anyone know a repair for this or a rebulider? I looked in history but didn't see anything. Thanks very much

Since this is twice this has happened, have you replaced the speedo cable? I'm just wondering if it is binding or in need of lube if it is old.

The cable has been replaced, I did that the first round actually. I was kinda guessing that I've had the same circumstance happen on two speedos.
The noise seems to be coming from the gauge/gears, maybe a worn bushing.
Thanks

Mine started growling and my Dad told me to lube the cable so I did that and it stopped growling. You may want to give that a shot, Its easier to remove the cable from the car then the speedometer. Although removing the speedometer isnt that difficult or time consuming.

Thats a good idea. It has been a while since I installed this one.
I pulled out the speedo I replaced off the shelf and lubed the shaft then spun it with a drill. I ran it for a few minuites, It hummed a little and then was quiet.
Thanks very much for the advice. I'm really glad I found this site to help and enjoy my Challenger. You all are a great bunch.  :clapping:

When you put the cable in last time did you lube it at all? I always put a smear of grease on the inner cable as I feed it into the outer cable, they are usually dry from new, don't allow too much build up at the top/speedo head.

LOL - mine was still rumbling after a new cable and then about a month ago it suddenly went crazy flicking all over the gauge.  Before I could park the skinny Rallye needle actually snapped off !

After I lubed the shaft (and replaced the needle) it is fine.  I guess they just go dry after a while.  It has been off the road since 2001.

no need to remove the cable to clean & lube it , you can just unplug it from the speedo & pull the cable out of the housing
