turn signal switch removal and replacement

I have a 71 Cuda that needed a new turn signal switch.  The previous owner, replaced the old switch which worked ,except the cam was broken, so it would not hold on right turns.  Well he must not have put it in correctly cause the hazard button does not move and I found the hazard flasher was removed.  So I want to go in and correct the situation, but I can't get the collaspable cylinder off that is right under the steering wheel.  I have a 4 in, 3 pronged "puller", do I need something bigger, like a 6-8 in puller?  Is there a spacer that goes under the switch?   :pullinghair:Many thanks JK

Just did this last month.

I think the can is 4 inches, think I used a 6 inch long puller.  There is a nut in there that has to be removed before the crush can will pop off be sure you got that off as well.  When I got the car the cam wasn't working at all so I just changed it out, but the unit was damaged and the cam wouldn't click when turning right.  After about a year of having to hold the turn signal through a right turn I changed out the entire unit last month it wasn't a very hard.

I had to use a puller the first time I took my crush can off. Now I can just put the steering wheel back on after removing that big nut, and I can pull it off.

Thanks to everyone.  I ended up using a harmonic balancer puller.  When a tighten the bolt the can came off with a load pop.  I figured out that it must not have been replaced with the "tab" in the correct position.  After I got it off, I checked out the turn signal switch and found that the hazzard button was too large to be pushed into the off position.  I don't know if it was the wrong switch or what.  I ground down the button  slightly until it fit the slot in the steering column.  It works fine now.  Thanks again.
