Should the drip rails be full of some kind of filler?

no, it's not supposed to be filled so much that it's even with the edge of the drip rail, you need a lip for the chrome trim to hang on,

over the years factory sealer will get hard, keep in mind most cars never meant to be on the road longer than 10 years,so 40+-  years is pretty good, I'm restoring 69 Dart GT and am very surprized to see alot of the seam sealer still pliable

LMAO! Fast n Crack suits it well,

but I am 100% serious about it cracking, I found a good replacement sealer for it though, 3M 08300 it looks and spreads same way, but stays flexible ,easy clean up ,been using it for long time with no issues.

there are dozens of sealers on the market ,alot of newer stuff is 2-part and works with amazing results,the only down side to it is that you have to buy expensive gun to dispense this stuff and for guys who will only use it for one project,is not worth it sometimes, I must have atleast 5 or 6 dispensing guns for different brands ,and what sucks even more, these companies switch things ,make different size cartridges after so many years ,so you have to buy a new gun again,lol

Yeah I noticed when I was taking stripping the seam sealer out of the trunk and floor boards some of it was really gummy, but the stuff in the drip rails was pretty hard.  Thank for the input.  I didn't even think about the chrome needing a little lip to attach to. 

67vertman - What color is your car?  It looks like the color that is under my weatherstripping on my car.  I'm trying to figure the color out, but it doesn't seem to match the color chips I have seen.  My orange is more orange than the Go Mango or the Hemi Orange.

I decided to go with 3M 8308 Sealer - Heavy-Bodied Seam Sealer.  It is a 2 part sealer.  It went on really easy and smooth.  It held thick at the sloped parts and smoothed itself out.  It looks like glass. One $25 pack will do about 10 driprails, I would guess.  Plus the paint shop loaned me the special gun to apply it.  What a deal!
