TC and rear end combo? Advice needed
« on: February 13, 2010 - 07:13:51 PM »
OK, here is the deal. I just bought a 360 for my 73 Barracuda. My rear end is a 2.76. I plan on going with a 518 OD this summer. My cam is in the 270 range. So, I believe I need at least a 3.73 to get my ratio in the 2.7 or so range in OD. Terry, I believe in a previous post recommended a non LU converter, Transmission center says you can use the LU(and sells the components). So, I need some advice on that. If I go non non LU, I can't go too high on my stall due to the OD(when I am cruising on the HWY), correct? I am looking for all the advice I can get so I only have to do this once.

Thanks
Jason

we need the tires size & the Od ratio to figure it out but you need to be in the powerband of the cam by 400 rpm or so & the converter needs to be locked at that rpm if you use a LU converter
what make is the cam , I am thining you need to be in the 2400 range on the converter with the cam you have & you want to be 2600+ at 70 mph

If you go lock up,you are limited on your stall RPM's and the converters are more expensive for what you get. For a car that is on the street most of it's life,it should be fine.

I have 255 60 15 tires. I don't know the exact cam, just bought the motor and the guy I bought if from couldn't remember the exact numbers, he thought it was a 272. I will pull the front cover this week. OD is .069 I believe. Terry, if I get a non LU does that also limit the TC I can get because of slippage at that low RPM? Or am I worried for nothing? I am not looking for a real high stall, just a little better than stock. If I go lock up, do you think I will not be happy with it? This a car I drive at least 4 days a week. Am I on the right track with the rear gears? Somewhere around 3.73.
Thanks
Jason

it would be close , i know of a 440 running .71 OD with 3.55 gears & 275/60 /15 tires & he is at 2200 rpm @ 70 MPH
so without doing all the math you are running a shorter tire & more gear with a touch more od ratio so I would guess you would be in the 2600-2700 range @70 mph
I might have time to do all the math later tonight

For your car you can go LU or NLU,which ever you wish. If you wanted say a 3500 to 4000 stall then you would need to go NLU.

OK, so if I go NLU, and say a 2400-2600 stall, at highway speeds when I am near that RPM do I need to worry about slip? Or is it no big deal.

With 3.91 gears I think you would be fine.
