Slapstick Shifter Problem
« on: February 17, 2010 - 06:24:55 PM »
I stopped for gas in my 73 Barracuda the other day when the shifter locked up and wouldn't shift into park and barely moved between Drive & Neutral.  I skipped the gas and just drove it home.  When I got there I gently tried shifting it back & forth when it dropped down an inch or so and then would shift correctly.  Turns out its missing the small screw that holds the plastic T-handle to the shifter mechanism.  While I was at it I also checked out the Slapstick feature and it just slid from 1 to D and even to N before stopping.  I'm pretty sure I was doing it correctly as I used to have a 73 Roadrunner with one many years ago.  I pressed in the button, pulled the handle all the way back, released the button which seemed to extend back out and then nudged the T-handle forward.  It should have just banged to the next gear, not slid to D/N correct?  Any ideas where to start trouble-shooting this?  Could something underneatch come loose or fall off when the handle came loose?  Any & all help is greatly appreciated!

Thanks in advance, Jim

There is a small puller spring to the rear of the shifter that is broken or missing, nothing special just need a spring that will do the job. ..

Excellent!  I'll check that out, thanks.
