A66 Chally has 14" or 15" steel wheels?? Black or silver??
« on: February 13, 2010 - 08:32:20 PM »
When I bought my 70 Chally it was in the a guys back yard with random wheels, Ford and Chrysler.  It is an A66.  I keep finding different information about what wheels are "supposed" to be on the car.  Most of the books say 14" for the A66 package, but I have seen a few old articles that have said the Hemi, T/A, and A66 came with 15' black wheels.  Anyone out there have a 70 A66?  Are they 14", 15", silver, or black??

I actually have a 15" silver, 15" black, and a 14" painted rim so I am thoroughly confused!!  One of the wheels is a Ford rim, so I have pretty much ruled out the option of Ford rims... :roflsmiley:

Have you checked out the Moparts A66 thread?  There is alot of great info there.  I believe it was said that 15" wheels were NOT part of the A66 package but was a "required" option.

Can't say 100% but mine came with 15" rally wheels when I got it in 76.  Tire inflation sticker shows 15" also.

Yeah that is what I keep seeing, 15" wheels.  What I read was that since the A66 had the heavy duty package, the 15" wheels were pretty much standard.  The only thing that keeps throwing me off is the A66 package description with 14" wheels, and the fact that I have seen a lot of A66 fender tags that don't have 15" wheels called out, but they have 15" wheels on the car.

LA66 - does your car have the W21 on your fender tag?

Here, I copied this from the Moparts thread...it was copied from the Hamtramck Historical site.

per the '70 Dodge "salesman's pocket guide" 9/23/69 version:
CODE A66 - Challenger 340 CID engine package - $258.90
NA Special Edition (29), NA R/T (JS)
15" Rallye wheels (W21) - required at EXTRA cost
collapsable spare (W34) - required at EXTRA cost

this changed at some point - as the following shows

per the '70 Dodge "dealership data book" no date found
CODE A66 - Challenger 340 CID engine package - includes
340 engine - E55
F70-14 RWL tires - T87
R/T hood
H.D. brakes
H.D. suspension
"bumble bee" stripe
"scat pack" decals
wheel lip mouldings "DELETED"

So it looks like at first, the 15" wheels were a required option at an extra cost but it was changed to an option later on.

I agree.  There was a 1970 Dodge Data Book revision that changed all the pages I linked above.

http://www.hamtramck-historical.com/images/dealerships/DealershipLetters/1970%20dodge%20data%20book%20revisions.jpg

When was this done?   :dunno:   Does the Data Book on HH.com have the new pages?  probably but  :dunno:  Finding an un-updated data book or the bulletin that should have been released when the requirement changed would be nice.  Didn't Dodge update the pocket guide when the Data Book changed?   :clueless:

My A66 car was an early build date car (can't remember the date code off hand) and it does not have a wheel call out on the fender tag nor do I have a build sheet for it, but on my car judging by the remnants of red paint on the brake drums I believe mine had 15" rallye wheels. Check the drums on yours if there is red paint on them chances are you had rallye wheels.

Thanks DetMatt1.  Mine was built in Nov 69 as well, so that answers my question.  Your wheels are silver right?

I think so, Mine did not have the rims with it, I bought it as a project car and it was missing quite a few things.
I posted some pics in my newbie thread a few days ago, check it out.

Are you sure the Rallye wheel cars got the painted drums?  I thought that just the Road wheel cars got the paint.  IF thats the case you would have had the 14" magnum 500 style wheels.

I think the holes around the outside of the Rallye wheels are out past the drums aren't they.  If they are, you wouldn't see the drum...and they wouldn't be painted.
