Correct brake pedal height off floor
« on: February 18, 2010 - 08:59:15 PM »
Have 1974 challenger, power brakes with 1970 clutch/brake pedal assy.  With the clutch pedal "up" against the rubber stop, the brake pedal is much lower, closer to the bare metal floor.  The short link from the brake pedal to brake pivot linkage is the one that came with the auto trany brake pedal.  Is this link the same length for auto and 4 spd??
I am used to seeing both clutch and brake pedals at about the same height off the floor...Is that how they should line up on mopar 4 speed??  Is the adjustment the rod on the back of the power booster to lift the brake pedal further off the floor?  Any worry about running the adjuster out too far??
Its been too many years since I ran the roads in my 4 spd GTX (paid $325 for the car, and gas was 40 cents a gallon).  I don't remember the pedal positions.

This seems to be how they are on power brake cars, the manual brake cars have the pedals at the same height.

Mine are both 70 models with power brakes and the brake pedal is much lower than the clutch on both cars.

Thank you both for the replies.  I looked at the rod out the pedal side of the power booster...it is NOT adjustable.  The rod out the front of the booster is adjustable, but that I'm sure is for correct engagement with the master cylinder pistons so they can return completely to expose the bleed openings from the resevoirs.
I'm going to look into the length of the link from the pedal to the pivot linkage, see if other mopars have a longer link I could use.  I don't think its safe to home-make one considering its what connects the brake pedal to booster and hydraulic cylinder.

The low brake pedal is by design for easy heel-toe driving.  The reason the pedal is higher on the manual brake car is caused by changing the brake pedal leverage so it won't be such a hard press to stop the car, the result of which is more pedal travel.  So the pedal has to be higher for more travel.
