Please explain a sealer coat to me

 If i have this right after block sanding and before applying base coat  a sealer coat is applied. What is the sealer coat? primer, or a special blend and what is the purpose. What if I do not apply a sealer coat and just go from primer to base coat? Please explain the who what and why of a sealer coat. I'm clueless less on this.

sealer is recommended for many reasons, it helps for base coat to adhere better,and the finish becomes more chip resistant, alot of sealers on the market are tintable and can save alot of money and time ,(one coat of tinted sealer and two coats of base is usually enough to get proper coverage versus 4-5 coats of base, you won't have to waste expensive paint just to get coverage),less chance of die-back, since there is less material on the car,

painting without sealer can be done and there are plenty of shops that don't use sealers, but the job just won't be the same, sometimes prep scratches will show through the clear and when the paint gets chipped,most of the time primer color will show,but with sealer,under there,usually only the clear will chip exposing the basecoat,

Also it is the last chance to repair any imperfections that you find before going to base. Most sealers are whats called non-sanding, if something shows up you can sand/repair then re-coat with sealer and go to the base.

Didn't mean to hijack your thread, but as long as ya all are on the subject, i just had a little question. I am using PPG's NCP 271 for my primer and sealer, but i am having a heck of a time getting it to lay smooth when i shoot the sealer. I mix it down with a half part of reducer as per the data sheet, but i don't feel like it is laying smooth enough for me to lay my base on top. What do you think? Probably my technique.

NCP-271 is a very good product but , I've never been happy with it as a sealer.
I would try NCS-2004 for a sealer, it lays very smooth.

Thanks Dave. I am by no means an expert at anything, but i tried my dangest to get that stuff to lay flat. I think i will try some of the NCS tommorrow.

what speed reducer you're using? try the slowest/slower reducer,maybe add a little more of it in the mix

I was using the DT 870. Thinning it more, wouldn't that burn off faster and set faster because of less primer and more thinner? My paint store suggested that i try the DT885 this next time, so i picked up a quart to try it.
