Fast Ratio steering-yes or no?
« on: March 28, 2011 - 08:58:29 AM »
Were putting a stage 2 FFI steering box into a 71' Challenger and was wondering if the fast ratio pitman arm is worth putting into the car? Has anybody driven with one of those in a mopar? Anything diffrent than the usual driving/ parking /cornering with this steering upgrade?

Here is some into on the car:

older suspension rebuilt with only 500 miles put on it in last 12 years
440 auto with HP exaust manifolds
late model b-body disc brakes 11.75
stock front swaybar
15x8 rims with T/A radials
car is dropped 2in front/2in rear lower blocks
all parts on front suspension were stock stlye replacment parts for the rebuild

Hope someone who has driver a car with fast ration can give us an idea on what to exspect on this conversion.

no to the pitman are? Article reads:

Steering Box and fast ratio pitman and idler arm –
I installed a Firm Feel Stage 3 Power Steering box as well as the fast ratio pitman arm and idler arm.  It may be the best modification I have made so far.  It is actually a bit stiffer than I expected, but gives the car a much more modern feel.
NOTE- The fast ratio pitman arm also allows the wheels to turn in and out farther than stock, so now my 245/60/15 fronts will rub the frame rail if I turn the wheel the whole way.

sounds like the only problem is if you turn a tall tire too far into your wheel well

Not my opinion, just what FJ5 said
The steering feels great but I would skip the fast ratio steering next time mostly because it cost $300 for the Pitman arm and idler arm and I personally don't think the quicker steering is that necessary for a cruiser like mine.  The tire rubbing is only an issue at full turn like a parking maneuver or a U turn.
I went from the  70 type steering box to the later one for the increased shaft size, so I needed a new pitman arm anyway and decided to try out the fast ratio stuff.

Ok, We had also bought a large selector stage 2 FFI box and figuered since a new arm was gonna cost $100 anyway, might as well and step up with the fast ratio kit. I cam gurantee the driver of the car is very agressive in corners and plans on upgradeing the frontend when other projects are done.

Now, has anybody actually driven a car with fast ratio power steering that can comment on their personal experience with it?

it all depends on what your application . the faster you go the harder it would be to steer . that stuff is for more of a cornering and street  performance up grade .
straight line you need the manuel  stock box  22to1 ratuio . its all in the application .
