!#$%$^ Son of a......messed up the nut
« on: February 26, 2010 - 06:45:25 PM »
I was pressing in the LCA pivot pin and had the nut on there to protect the threads of the pin..

Well, I ended up boogering the threads at the top of the nut.

If I cant find a chase that size, anyone know off hand what grade and size and pitch the nuts are?

It was going so well...until I went to put the nut on and found it wouldnt go anymore..... :banghead: :pullinghair: :pullinghair: :pullinghair: :pullinghair: :banghead: :banghead: :banghead: :banghead: :banghead: :banghead: :banghead: :banghead: :banghead: :banghead: :banghead:

Those nuts are peened over slightly from the factory creating a locking type deal. You sure yours got messed up?

Yeah...the top thread or two is crushed in and wavey.....I get to that point wh :nzflag:ile tightening it and it stops SOLID....holding the LCA in place , it aint budging....I gace it some oomph too..the other side needed a little but not like this. And I dont want to hose the pin's threads.   :pullinghair:

Are you saying I need the real deal?  Its suspension and a critical nut at that....

you can file the threads or even bevel the first few with a grinder. You will have plenty sticking out once installed. But I see Dave may have come to your rescue.

Thanks for the grinding advice....sometimes we overlook the obvious.   LOL

That worked...ground the top surface down just a little first using the side of the bench grinder's wheel....the took took a cone shaped grinding stone and ground the threads some.

:2thumbs: All is right with the world again for the time being and the build can continue....

Dave, thanks for the offer man!  Don't know what I would do without this forum and the people on it!

Just for future reference though....what is the best way to protect the threads on the pin AND the nut when using a press to press that pin in?  The first one went just fine....dont know what happened on this one.

Here are a couple of ways to do it.
First make sure the pin his lightly sanded a little to remove any burrs, sand the top edge of the bushing sleeve to remove any burrs there.Either make a sleeve that fitts over the pin to press on the flange at the bottom and press on it or put the nut on upside down running it on untill it is flush with the pin then press it in.Also don't forget to put a block in the area that the tortion bar go's in to block the bushing from trying to come out as you are pressing the pin.

Or pick up another nut from the hardware store and use it to install the part(s). If it gets damaged, who cares. :2cents: It's the method I use most often.

Luckily, got mine to work.  :woohoo:
