tail light material
« on: February 24, 2010 - 06:06:27 AM »
I guess this is an electrical question its about tail lights

I am looking for a couple flat pieces of tail light lense - I am looking to make some custom tail lights- I have seen on a couple of the TV shows they make new tail lights or light panels on some cars (like overhaulin and west coast customs ) I have searched hi and low without any success. Even went searching junk yards and truck salvage yards looking for something large enuff to cut and use - no luck. the individual pieces only need to be 6 x 10 for lenses but it would be nice to find something longer to make a light bar out of too. Any ideas? I am open to suggesstion for anything that would look legal - don't care if its DOT approved

thanks

How about something like this.  http://www.itwconsumer.com/catalog.aspx?prodID=229

You could put this over a plexi-glass sheet for a stronger lense.

We have a plastic company in St. Louis that I bought lexan and colored plexiglass from. But if you want tail light material, head to the local junk yards and look around there. Lots of them to cut from.

I wonder if one of the plastic panels they make for drop ceiling light fixtures could be used; they come with different textures, usually smooth on one side, and the size of a full size drop ceiling tile.  I'd assume you could either get some kind of transparent dye or use colored gel film behind the plastic to provide the needed color.

No idea how they'd hold up exposed to the elements though
