Right Cam?
« on: February 28, 2010 - 08:01:40 PM »
Looking for a hot street cam for my 340 in a '72 Barracuda. I have my converter off and it is a 2200 stall. I was going to go with a lunati voodoo hyd tappet 60403

60403
Advertised Duration IN/EX: 268/276
Duration @ .050 IN/EX: 226/234
Gross Valve Lift IN/EX: .494"/.513"
LSA / ICL: 110/106

Lunati says it likes a 2400 stall. I will be running 3.55 gears on 28 tires. Should I be stepping down to the 60402 to get the results I want? Is 200 stall difference that big? I don't have power brakes so vacuum is not a consideration.

60402
Advertised Duration IN/EX: 262/268
Duration @ .050 IN/EX: 220/226
Gross Valve Lift IN/EX: .475"/.494"
LSA / ICL: 112/108

try the 60403 cam , it should be close enough to work , make sure you check the power valve in the center carb so that you have enough vacuum it keep it closed at idle in gear if it is an auto , or install a 4.5" power valve now & check the vacuum once you have it running

Is the power valve the same as jetting?

Is the power valve the same as jetting?

It's in the ball park.  Now didn't I clear that up?   :22yikes:

The jetting is the fuel that will constantly flow into the metering block. Of course, jets can be changed if you are running too rich or too lean. The power valve only comes into play when the vacuum falls below whatever it is rated at(call it a boost). So if your power valve is rated at 4.5, extra gas will enter the metering block when the vacuum falls below 4.5. Of course this is just supposed to happen at wide open throttle, or in accelerating conditions. The power valve you use is based off your vacuum at idle, so with a 4.5, I would guess this is a big cam. Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't the power valve rating 4-6 below your vacuum at idle?

It's a Lunati 268 flat tappet....it was running rich before the build....So I'll prolly just wait and see then how goes...
I mean what's the worst thing that can go wrong...   :poopoke:      :icon16:

the power valve adds more fuel under high load but is not the same as changing the jets  both enrich the jet circuit , but if the power valve is open at idle it will run rich & may need to be changed to a lower vacuum rating to keep it closed at idle

That was probably the problem I had before, too rich.  Hopefully it will be better w/new cam and ported heads.
Stage 3 J heads getting done by Shadydell, Voodoo 60403, pro magnum rockers and some 3.55's.  :woohoo:
Oh yeah..new msd ignition w/a 6AL box.  :burnout:

Ask me , what can go wrong. If you want idle quality and low end response, go 60401.
