This Cluch linkage still does not seem right
« on: June 19, 2009 - 06:28:16 PM »
So finally got to sit in the car and run it. Pushed the pedal in and (as stated in an earlier post) the pedal does not travel all the way to the floor so transmission will not go into first and grinds into reverse. Clutch feels good for the first half of travel and spongy on the second half. If I shut the engine off and put it into Rev or 1st then start the engine it is not too bad. The top lever of the z-bar seems to be away from the firewall too far (IE do I have the incorrect first link from the pedal to the z-bar? too long) so if you push the pedal down the top z-bar lever goes near to over center. Physics and leverage coming into play here. Also the adjustable second link has the nuts a long way down the threads to get the freeplay and the O/C spring to stay back. Now this means as the clutch wears I will run out of threads to adjust with - right? as we back off the adjustment towards the front of the car as the clutch wears. I took the 3 rubber stops out of the pressure plate when installing the clutch and the kevlar plate only goes in one way so I do not see the need to pull the clutch again. What I need is for a member to post a picture of a BB and Mcleod type clutch setup please. Both from the same view as the picture and the adjuster beneath.

Is this a Borg & Beck pressure plate?  If so, it sounds like one of the centrifugal rollers is stuck.

CG it is as Neil said. So what is the fix if that is the roller being the problem? Pull er out? Or will some use get it loose? Also do you know what the travel is at the fingers from full out to full in. Just trying to cover all of the bases here.

Since those rollers are RPM active, you could try reving it up in neutral to see if you could free it.

So here's the scoop for the members to ponder and hopefully save some grief. I contacted Hays (as they are the Mopar Clutch vendor/manufacturer) and they promptly sent a response back the next day. After installing my new Passon gearbox I noticed my clutch fingers about halfway down towards the flywheel. Hays say that the clutch is made for a plate compressed thickness of 0.325" which my plate is exactly - so out to the max. They said to measure the plate compressed thickness and if it is within tolerance then the pressure plate requires re-setting at the factory. Namely the fingers will be adjusted. What happened was that the pedal was only 3/4 down because the fingers were bottomed out with still no release on the plate - still binding. So now it took me 1hr 15 mins to get the tranny out again - thankful for 4 post hoists and transmission jacks. Will send the pressure plate to Hays tomorrow then wait.
Hope this helps someone else - be alert to finger height when putting a new clutch in. I am talking B&B type clutches here.

It always pays to check finger installed height on all clutch's, they should be just above flat with a new clutch plate.    :2thumbs:
