How to remove relief valve...
« on: March 11, 2010 - 08:49:20 PM »
I pulled the cotter pin that holds the relief valve in, but I can't get it out. I'm trying to figure out if this was what killed my engine....
Should this thing be difficult to remove?
I thought it should just slide out nice and easy.

Did you remove the little "freeze plug" behind the cotter pin?

No, I never saw a freeze plug. Where is it? What does it look like? I couldn't move the piston shaped thing in there that I assume is the relief valve. Shouldn't that thing move freely?  I put a small bolt on top of the piston shaped thing that I think is the relief valve and tapped it with a hammer, I was able to get it to move in about 1/8''...............

Maybe it's the flash but that pump looks scored and is that wear on the rotor in the back ground, was it a new pump to begin with.   :clueless:

The piston shaped thing is the freeze plug.  You have to punch/drill a hole in it to give you something to grab on to remove it.  Behind it is the spring, then the releif valve.

Drill a small hole in the plug (like 1/8") and dont let teh drill go deep into the passage behind it. Use a sheet metal screw to thread into the hole. Use pliers to lever out the plug. Spring and valve are behind it.

Glenn, I see this stuff about your motor & want to puke... I assume this was a new pump, Do the manufacturers of these things not take some responsibility in such a case? If so you might not want to get to rough with it.

There's no way that is the pump's fault. It would have had to have assembled the engine.
