lifters rattling at high RPM
« on: March 19, 2010 - 07:59:37 PM »
the lifters in my 440 rattle pretty bad at about 3500 rpm and higher, what can i do to stop this? I run 93 octane shell v-power gas in it and i run castrol GTX HD 10w-30 motor oil with a quart of Lucas oil treatment and it is not low on oil at all...im actually running it a half quart more then it should because it burns a little bit of oil.

Are you sure it's not an exhaust leak?

Sounds like detonation, turn the timing back a few degrees and see it it goes away.

The goal never changes - Stop the 60' timer with your back tires

At 3500RPM it is hard to believe it is lifters rattling. What is the compression ratio of your engine? If 9.5:1 or lower. 93 octane would be fine. Maybe your timing is too far advanced as in this is pinging rather than rattling?

im pretty sure its 9.5:1. I had 2 header bolts that i tightened about a quarter of a turn and all of the others were so tight that i couldnt budge them so im thinking it isnt an exhaust leak. Ill look into the timing thing
