Seam sealer?
« on: March 17, 2010 - 11:42:31 PM »
Has anyone had luck replicating the look of factor seam sealer in thier trunk?

It looks like they used a tool that dispensed the sealer about two inches wide.

any tips or tricks would be great.

A broken off paint stirring stick will make the grooves.

Looking at it, they might of used at the factory was some type of a pneumatic gun that dispersed it out of a 2 inch hole. It's a big blob of the stuff for seams and they had to work fast of course.

All purpose 3M seam sealer is water diluable when it gets wet. Takes a long time to dry when thick is the downside. Seems workable to duplicate.

Do it in layers. Spray bottle mist it first. So working it to look real might be an option.

Great tips.  I am not to concerned with 100% factory.  However I don't want it to look like a three year old did it.

I wanted to ask you Stephan about this earlier.

What brand or type do you typically use?
I tried 3M Fast and Firm but it was too sticky and gooey to get the flowed look. then I hear it cracks later on.

When I used the 3M all purpose seam sealer, I saw how much manageable it was to coax into the right look and it is kinda rubbery.  As I said, it takes too long to dry when it's thick seams.

Mike, stay away from fast n firm,it will crack. I use 8300, don't expect it to stay wet for longer than few minutes, I do a section at a time and move on

I bought two tubes of white, for around the wheel wells and rear panel.  I also bought one tube of black for the front edge of the trunk pan, close to the back seat, as that is how my car came from the factory.

As you can see, even the factory sealer looks uneven.

I used a brushable sealer that comes in a can and cut the bristles back on 2" brush.

IF you had a three year old do it, it would probablly come out looking 100% correct.

After relooking at the photos, when I posted them, it does look like a three year old work as a line worker.
