Street 440 Custom Cam Idea
« on: March 24, 2010 - 06:44:54 AM »
Guys:

I plan on getting a custom grind cam for my 440 after talking with a Comp Cam tech concerning my street 440 with power brakes.  He told me as long as the overlap stays around 54 - 57, the brakes should be very nice.  He also taught me how to calculate overlap and such.  I made a excel sheet with a calculator for cam specs and came up with the following:

Cam A = 280 / 288   0.509   114      56   2000-6000    My Specs
Cam B = 274 / 286   0.509   112      56   2000-6000   XE274H (112 LSA & .509 Lift

Which cam would be the better street performer ?  Alittle less duration but tighter LSA (112 vs 114)  OR more cam duration and wider LSA ??

Both cams have the same amount of overlap (56).
Both cams have a .509 lift.  (Tech told me the stock 906 heads magic number is around .510 for flow)

Thanks... John

I would use the 114* cam with manifolds & the other with headers

The car has Hooker Super Comp headers. NO manifolds.

I can't find the lobes he suggested in the lobe catalog.. So I'd have to say XE274 as it's a known quantity. But I am not sure it will run your power brakes. Maybe post the rest of the build info, and be detailed.

I liked the Ultradyne 288/296  .485 in .507 ex so much i'm putting the same cam in my Super Bee. not a ton of vacuum but even with the six pack plenty for power brakes.

AMX:

What was the LSA of that cam ???

The cam should run my power brakes.  The XE268 has a overlap of 54, the XE274 on the 112 LSA drops the overlap to 56 which should be fine.

They are so close in spec I don't know that you'll "feel" a big difference in performance. Choice would depend on compression ratio and how close you are to detonation. The longer duration will tolerate a hair more squeeze in the chamber.
