8 3/4 axle shaft puller?
« on: March 18, 2010 - 07:49:52 PM »
Dose the removal of the axle shafts require a puller? I am trying to pull them out but they seam to be stuck and I don't want to go hammering on stuff and fubaring anything up so i stopped before i did any damage :icon16: .
Thanks,Charles

If you already have the axle flange bolts pulled, and it's the first time, look for a small lock washer on 1 stud on each side. It will have little locking teeth on it preventing the axle to come out easy.  Sometimes you need a puller, but on rare occasions. You can install the drum on backwards useing the lugs and give it a yank to.

EDIT: Just tried it again no lock washers, did try the backwards drum trick pulling with with my feet on the leaf springs and its still not moving.
I will start again fresh in the am.

usually no puller required as Al said unless it is 64 & older with a nut on the end of the axle then they definatly need a puller to remove them

I use a piece of chain just wrap around the axle and hook it tight so it wont come off and a quick jerk will pop it out
