A couple of quick gas tank questions
« on: September 27, 2004 - 12:32:45 PM »
This doesn't really have any bearing on anything, but about a year ago when I removed my gas tank, I found a giant spring lying in the bottom.  Everything works with the tank as far as the sending unit and pick up, but I can figure out where this spring came from.  It actuall looks like a spring off of an old gas station pump nozzle.  Is there supposed to be a spring of that size in there for some reason or another?  Also, what if any noticeable affect will a crushed vent line have on the car.  It seems that the previous owner had sidepipes installed on the car.  Yes.....  sidepipes.  The ventline is badly crushed.  I have the new set of supply and vent lines, but I've been procrastinating for about 3 years now.  I was under the gun to get the car ready for my wedding last august, and that was one of the things I skipped over.  Now that I am under no pressure I was wondering if the replacement of the vent/supply lines is a massive undertaking, or one that can be completed in a day or two.

From what I know (which isn't much) there is nothing that would require a spring like that!  As for the vent line, You could probably replace it in a couple hours.  But if in a pinch, a vented gas cap would supply the same results!   ;D

I agree , the spring is probably off a filler nozzle as you suspect , the vent line is easily changed , as long as it is open it will not have any effect anyway so the discision to replace it is your call

I cna't really tell if it's blocked or open.  Would it make the engine sputter/hesitate/stall or anything like that if it were blocked.  I have the vent lines already.  I think that when I ordered them, I go 3/8" lines.  I know that the smallblocks used 5/16" lines though.  With the 340 and the 750 dual feed holley, will the 3/8" lines have any adverse affect on the car?  I assumed that it would not, but I just want to make sure.  This is what the crushed line looks like.

If you had no vetilation at all, then your car would sputter. It might also cause any of the rubber lines before the fuel pump to collapse on themselves, so I'm guessing it isn't totally clogged or you would have run into that. With your setup, either diameter fuel line would work. Just keep in mind, if you go with the bigger 3/8", then the clips that hold it to the frame will have to be changed. I think there might be 4 of them ???

I agree there is no adverse effect using the 3/8 " lines
