Changing rear shocks on a 71 Ebody: Steps?
« on: April 06, 2010 - 09:50:03 PM »
I haven't changed out a set of rear shocks since I was in HS  (I'm 49 now!)

Plz go over the steps so I dont put an eye out with a leaf spring.    Thanks

Jack up car under pumpkin, place jack stands under axles, that keeps the suspension from sagging low, loosen top mounting bolts, then remove lower bolts.

about does it..

Make sure the stands are safe and car is secure, we dont want to here car felll :)

good luck, save all bolts and hardware, you may nede some of it with the new shocks.

Actually, step one should be hosing off the underside of the car to remove any loose debris.

Dirt tends to accumulate on that cross member and on the fuel tank lip.

I seem to forget to do this when I'm working in that area and always get a face full of grime.  :eek4:

I'm not sure if we are talking Cudas or Challengers here, or even if it matters, but the Challengers have removable body plugs in the trunk to give you access to the bolt holding the top of the shock in place.

depends which year , the trunk floor pan was modified for different years allowing different access holes to the upper shock bolt
