If you wrench for a living, snap on or mac or matco. For home, craftsman, husky etc, more likely to find a store open on a weekend than a tool truck guy at home - plus they (sears, HD, Lowe's etc.) don't know the difference as to why/how you broke a tool, they'll just give you another one. A craftsman combo kit is a great start and reasonably priced. Also, used tools have next to no resale value, check craigslist, just be sure the stuff aint stolen.

I did everything on this car except the fancy paint stuff and I drive it...and I can't seem to stop messing with it....

I buy Craftsman for the tools that I know I will use a lot, and buy from Harbor Freight for the things that I might only use a few times. I would love to buy Snap On or Mac but I just can't spend that much on tools that I only use on weekends.

This is pretty much me too.  I think I will stick to this plan, and start checking CL and the pawn shops.
