Anyone install a 70 Barracuda grille into 72 Barracuda fenders.
« on: February 23, 2010 - 11:07:43 PM »
I just bought a solid 70 Barracuda but it has 72 fenders. They are perfect rust free fenders and I would like to use them. This is going to be a steet machine type car for my son and we're not overly worried about absolute correctness. I'll weld in some 70-71 style side marker openings and I have a 70 style grille and header panel.

What I'm not real sure about is the headlamp bucket area. I know that the 70's had a different headlamp inner bucket but it looks like the 72 style will work. I've used 72 fenders to convert into 71 fenders many times but have never converted 72 style fenders into 70's.

I know that 70 fenders have the h/l bucket mounts welded in and the 72 up's are bolted in. There may be an extra screw in the corner as well but that's not a big deal. I've probably built 30 barracudas of all year models and this is the first time that I've done this particular transformation.

Anyone tried this before?

:jumping:well on my -70 cuda i think i have a -72 fender on the driver side,it has both 70 and 72  stampings for the fender/side light,at least it looks like that but i guess a top notch body pro could have welded in the -70 sidemarker stamping on a -72 fender.anyway the headlamp/grille bezel fits fine, the difference on my car is that the two screws that mount the grill bucket on the -72 fender screws right in to holes at the inside of the fender, but on my pass side -70 fender there are white plastic distances inserted into the fender that those 2 screws then screw into,it seems to work

That tells me that maybe they will work okay. I'll just have to put the car together and try it. I've altered 70 fenders and made them into 71 fenders before so I can fab stuff up okay. It was so strange that they continued using the "four headlamp" back buckets in the 72 up fenders. I guess they decided not to go back to the 70 style back buckets to save cost on replacement fenders. They did something similar on the Challenger fenders. If you see a 70-71 fender that has the squarish cutout on the core support mount like the 72 up fenders, then you have a parts department replacement fender. After 72 they just made the one type of support for all fenders.

I looked and I don't have a single pic of the top of a 72 to 74 Challenger fender. The square cutout is on the panel that attaches to the core support. I think it's for one of the grille brackets. The 70-71's didn't have that cutout but the 70-71 parts department fenders that were manufactured after the 72's came out are punched. One of my son's 70 Challenger fenders had that cutout.
