MIG gas cylinder
« on: April 19, 2010 - 12:13:59 PM »
I just bought an 80 Cu ft. cylinder with 25%/75% MIG mix. I paid $207.
Where did you get your cylinder and how much did you pay? What I paid is a lot more than I was expecting.
I have never MIG welded. I just bought a new machine and am planning on teaching myself to weld. I am planning on doing sheetmetal repair/replacement when I feel I can do a nice job with the welder.

I just bought a 40 cu ft full for $140. I'm doing the same as you with my new welder. Refills are about $20. Got it thru a local welding supply. I was going to do the one at Northern Tool, but the same size cylinder was around $180 empty.

Im not 100% sure on this because its been years, but I believe my 40 cu ft was $80 and my 80 cu ft was like $140. I do know that it cost 28 bucks to fill the 80 cu ft tank because I just did it a month ago....

That isn't outrageous... I think I paid about half that for a cylinder that was half the size... refills aren't too bad, but the initial cost of the cylinder about floored me... I thought you just kept bringing it back and getting another one and never had to pay for it, but I was wrong... I am going to face the same thing when I go for my new acetlyne fill up... I have such an old tank, I don't think they are going to just do a swap, I would imagine it is going to be turned in and I have to buy a new one... more "safe".

I checked today for my cylinder. I had been useing flux core. The Welding supply shop told me 236.00 for the 80# new cylinder with argon, and then 30 bucks a refill. He alos said that when I do come to get a refill that they just exchange bottle after that, even if the bottle is outdated, they still sway, then they get the old bottle recirtified. I was going to rent a bottle and he said buying outright was better in the long run

buy the cheapest, crustiest cylinder you can find,( this will set you in the owner tank catagory ) take it in, tell em you want to go the next size up ( or whatever size you desire ), they will charge a "upgrade" fee. about 20 bucks or so depending on the size jump.
exchanges here are about 16.00 here for 25/75 on a 80 tank

and yes, they recertify old cylinders within spec.
