Really glad to hear that this one had a happy ending. You thanked everyone that helped out here BUT don't forget to thank that gem of a wife of yours too.

THAT IS AWESOME NEWS!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Glad to here all is well. I would find that intake leak first before you change the oil. Just in case you have to pull it off again. :2thumbs: :2thumbs:

Well,  I found the intake leak.....it was a CARB base gasket leak.

When I installed the 1/2" wood spacer I used the gasket that came with it....wrong move.

Somehow I didnt notice the gap..one on each side of the carb base....

I have a performer manifold like this :

The gaps were towards the rear of the carb base, where the manifold flares out.

The car was running "ok" when warming up but it had a lower idle than it did before....like a vac leak would cause.   What was happening was that when Iwas spraying around the intake manifold gasket looking for leaks, the spray was getting into that carb base gasket gap on each side, which I couldnt see, and therefore making the idle go up....

The way I found it was I took the car out this afternoon....it rn worse and worse as it warmed up....wanting to stall when stopped....then when you would pull out it would wheeze and gasp then kick in.....Made a stop at a store to get bolts and as we were pulling into the lot the car puttered out.....retarting was easy enough but as soon as it would go into gear it would stall....then it started backfiring thru the carb and exhaust, etc.

Started looking all over it and in the bright sunshine I saw that one gap, at just the right angle....put some electrical tape over it and it got us home......didn't notice the gap on the other side....drove a couple miles home.....no problem....but then right as we hit the driveway it did it again.....the other gap was still open so all I can figure is that as the car heats up the gap causes it to run leaner and leaner....and by the time I got home it was really leaning out from that second gap.  Let her cool a little and got into the garage.

I called edelbrock and they basically said to scrap the wood spacer and reinstall my edelbrock #9266 (asebstos double heat insulator gasket), but this time use the square bore plate #3899 under it which I had not done before....he told me that was likely a source of a vacuum leak.

Basically i cant run the wood spacer with my engine, manifold and hood setup due to height and the manifold itself having that bowled-out design at the back...the spacer isnt wide enough to seal it.  I could probably use a  #3899 gasket on the manifoldm then the plate, then another gasket, then the wood, then another gasket then the carb, but i wont have the clearance for that.

The car ran fine before (aside from cutting out)....I had installed the wood spacer hoping to eliminate my hot start issues......not a real problem, just annoying and a little embarassing I guess....I am going to leave the asbestos gasket on there until I get the car running right again and not dying on me.

Man, nothing can be easy.  LOL

if you blocked the egr passages on the heads with a shim, then you should be good

I didnt block the passages this time....didnt have anything on hand to use and wasnt sure if the intake would seal right just sticking shims in there...

Last night I swapped the wood spacer out and installed all that stuff out and also put the coil I was using last summer back in (found nuts that would work and not strip)......

She started up OK and seemed to idle fine in the driveway.....and when I sprayed for vac leaks in the same spot on the intake I couldnt find any...so the carb base gasket gaps were my leaks.  Didnt venture out as it was late and dark and didnt want to be stranded.  Will try again today after work.

I am praying that the large vac leaks are what was causing the backfiring thru the carb and such.......and not an issue with the valves, etc due to the rag......but would vac leaks (and mine were large) cause the engine to run worse and worse as she warms up?  I figured it was getting leaner and leaner as she heated up.   :dunno:

It went thru my mind this morning that maybe I *DO* have a valve issue or something as a result of the rag incident and it only comes to full display once the engine is hot.  I hope thats not the case.

It's possible that your choke was running the motor rich enough to compensate for the vacuum leak.  As the choke comes off, the motor leans out, in this case becoming too lean.  Temp gauge tell you anything while this was going on?

I let the engine warm up in the driveway and before we left , I made sure the choke was fully open.....

I think I am set a little rich anyways, so maybe that also played into it....and the hotter the engine got the leaner it got (right?)

The temp gauge did show a little warm by the time it really started acting up, but not by a huge amount....gauge showed 180.....it is usually a little lower....

Well, let the engine warm up and run in my driveway for 15 minutes without issue....idled the way she used to....then drove around on the back streets for about 40 minutes.....temp never got above 170 ish....ran great.  Stopped for awhile and let the car sit for about 13 minutes....took a long crank but she started and then ran another 10 minutes or so home.

So far no issues.

I a crossing my fingers.

Disappointed that I cant try the wood spacer right now....but glad to have the car running again.

hopefully will stay that way.  LOL

...I'd say more like "Idiot Proof"....LOL    :smilielol:

Took the car out again to get some pics and as soon as we pulled over to snap a few, a guy pulls in behind us and starts gushing about the car.....he leaves and 5 minutes later, another guy stops and gets out of his car and does several walk arounds and such.....   :2thumbs:  Yeah, I am back on a "cuda high".   :2thumbs:
