Need a new fuel tank filler neck gasket/grommet

Just when I thought I was on the home stretch, I find that i have a leak at the filler neck of the fuel tank.....the guys who painted my car (before I bought it) had the tank down to check it etc....its solid alright....but they left the old filler neck grommet on!  It was hanging on by a thread.

So, is there any way to do this without dropping the tank altogether, or is that the only option?  I JUST got done a few days ago putting all new vent hoses on (4 of them) because two were leaking like a sieve.....thought THAT was my leak.

Not.       It isnt leaking when parke, just after moving her in to the garage...so its slosh action (1/2 tank of gas).....and a good leak.

I have the valance down and confirmed the grommet there is trash......I peeled up the trunk "sock" that fits around the filler neck and when they put in the trunk floor they didnt clearance around the front of the tube...so I dont think I can slip it down, etc.....

I assume I just have to drain the tank, disconnect the filler neck where it mounts to the rear panel, undo ALL of the hoses and the lossen the two nuts todrop the tank? Any tips/tricks?

Second question, where can I find one fast?  Looked at Rock auto and autozone to start and no-go....

All of the above, and as far as getting it on, you will most likely have to drop the tank.  I helped with getting mine on last year, and we tried to do it without dropping it, but we just couldn't get it all the way out of the tank.  I think we undid the passenger side strap and that was enough.  Just make sure you don't have a full tank because you will end up tilting it to get the neck out.

I have installed one without dropping the tank.  A little something slippery on the neck will help some.

I installed the seal (and a new filler neck to trunk floor seal) yesterday.   basically just loosened the tank and dropped it some....didnt have to pull it all the way down.....

I used KY Jelly as a lube..worked great!

Did you take any pics? How much did you loosen it, and how far did you have to drop it.

I may have this project in my future.

No didnt think to take pics.....sorry....

But basically here is what I did....

-- remove vent hose splash shield (two bolts on inside of right rear wheel well)
--remove muffler shield (3 bolts)
-- remove 4 hoses (or was it 5?) from gas tank on vent hose side...leave hoses dangling
-- remove ground strap, fuel feed hoes and fuel gauge wire from sending unit on left side of tank
-- remove rear valance -- mine has 4 screws on top edge below bumper and 2 bolts on either side.....yours may differ
-- remove 4 screws holding filler neck to rear panel of car
-- loosen the two nuts holding the tank straps up.....I loosneded them to just about the very end....

At that point, the tank can be seperated from the filler tube....then the tube removed through the rear panel....this is where I also removed the old trunk floor/filler neck seal.....then reach through and removed (whats left) of the old filler neck/gas tank seal.....

I used a generic KY Jelly to lube up the seals for installation....reveresed everything else.

Not real hard at all....a bit of a PITA at times but straightforward.

Shadango did replacing the grommet stop the leak? 

Mine was leaking like a sieve so I replaced the grommet.   I did it without dropping the tank.  It was a bit of work but I pulled it off.  However it is still leaking.   Maybe I torqued it too much during installation..   Is there any type of sealer I can use?
