Buying a used 8 3/4 center chunk questions
« on: April 26, 2010 - 12:04:17 PM »
I may be going to look at/buy a 8 3/4 chunk for my fish.

seller says its a 3.55, sure grip, 489 case, recently rebuilt by a supposed "mopar guru" in the area....

Just what I have had my eyes open for...except it is a cone type and I would prefer the clutch type 9wouldnt I???).

What stuff do I need to look for when buying a chunk like this?

They are asking $450 firm....I know the combination of the gears and 489 seem like a good deal....not sure about the cone type suregrip though

Probably gonna hold out for a 742/clutch type....but didnt want to pass this up if its a steal....I dont think it is.....but...

Thanks guys!

$450 is a reasonable deal even if the sure grip is worn out you have good gears & the heavy carrier , the clutch is a better design but the cone will work & I doubt you will put enough miles on it / year that it would wear out soon if it is ok

The setup pattern does not look good on that one, and I have to wonder what the reasoning was behind replacing the bolts, that just seems weird. The shoulder of the bolt is the only thing that locates the bearing caps, maybe they are the same as the factory ones but who knows?  :dunno: The thing you can't tell on a 489 is if the pinion crush sleeve is bad, which takes out the pinion bearings. I would pass on this one but that is just me.

70 Cuda, 7.0L Gen-III Hemi, Viper T56 w/9310 gearset, 3.91's, Megasquirt MS3x v3.57, Innovate wideband, Firm Feel upper arms, torsion bars, springs and strut rods, QA1 DA shocks. I did everything on this car except the fancy paint stuff and I drive it...and I can't seem to stop messing with it....

............I would have 2 agree with ntstlgl1970.........the replacement bolts wont have the shoulder 2 locate the cap...........the washers take away from bolt torque also...............the pattern is not the best..........also the pinion came loose 1ce as u can see there is pinion tooth marks on the suregrip unit..................kim........ :canada:
