I think that you should have the tank removed if the fuel line is rusty, the tank will be worse, after all any rust in tank will end up being sucked forward at some stage. At least you should have trouble free fuel worries in the future.   

Actually I had that problem in reverse.  The prior owner replaced the tank but nothing else.  Then he had the carb rebuilt which got the car running, but not for long.
