New steering columns
« on: May 09, 2010 - 02:00:22 PM »
I'm starting to get some play in the old column. The RMS comes with a nylon bushing that you insert into the bottom for use with the old factory one. It's not exactly rigid to begin with. Also,With the manual rack the first little u joint is getting some play.I think as a result of all the driving. And the added stresses.P/S someday. So I think a new column would be a nice creature comfort upgrade. And be more adequate. Are the new columns stiffer/ safer?  Which ones do you like?  Probably a tilt.  Any recommendations?    :dunno: Thanx.   R/T

Flaming River is good but more or less a universal fit. You'll have to make the mount work at the floor board. The Ididit direct fit (same as XV) is a true direct fit, but the last time I checked the e-body column is only available with the column key because that's how they were only available from factory. If that is ok, then that column will bolt in. If you are doing a push to start then this won't work. Check the key position also. Some are at the 3 o'clock position some at 5 which drags on your knees. Flaming River columns are stainless and I believe the Ididit are available in multiple finishes.

Most also have options for washer button, etc. on the turn signal lever. For safety check which ones are available with a collapsible column unless you want to get skewered in an accident.

I don't have personal experience with either, but have been looking at the same.

Pics of my Cordoba column are in this thread:

I also had some install pics in my resto thread, about half way down. I have a nice small Grant Cherry-wood steering wheel for it when done. $29 for that column.

If you have a small block, you can use the rag-joint that came with it. With my big block, I just cut it off then welded on a tube to extend it to the lower tube.  I also recommend the Power steering upgrade that you are thinking about.
