Anyone get stressed out over repairs / improvements made?
« on: May 29, 2010 - 11:40:12 PM »
Anyone worry that they will / have screwed something up when they are working on their classics?

I just finished up a new fuel system, new pump, lines, regulator and custom reg mount at the carb, and allthough there are no leaks (i fixed the last one today) I am a little concenred that something will fail, resulting in well...you know. ::)

Should I just learn to have confidnece in my abilites...and enjoy the hell out of my hotrod?

Almost all the time.  But then I just jump in and do it, if you screw it up you learn from it and fix it again.

I just put front torque boxes in my car.  Never did them before, so I took my time checked everything three times and weld them in.  They turned out pretty good!  Next comes the backs, spring plates, and frame connectors, and I will worry that I will screw them up.

Only on long trips, endurance wise for the first few hundred miles. Other than that, just relax, make sure it's torqued and sealed, then enjoy. Vibration is a killer

This is the thrill and sucky part of doing your own engine work. Checking things at idle usually don't mean much. It's not until you get on the hiway and let her rip that you know if things are good to go or not. I have had a few failures, but also a few nice surprises. I only knew the basics of mechanical work before I bought mine, so I might have been behind the curve. I always drive the old car with a tool box in the trunk, and a cell phone just in case. In any event though, after hacking away all these years on that car, I think I could drive it across the country if I could afford the gas.

It happens all the time, but that's what drives me to check and double check my work.  I always have fingers crossed on that first test drive...especially with electrical work.  No major problems to date on two restorations so I guess I'm doing OK  :2thumbs:

I get freaked out all the time.  I rebuilt my entire rear end.  The axle, brakes, and center section.  It took a while to not scrutinize every little noise and be able to drive in peace!

I do all the work on my Harley and have done some pretty major work to it. Talk about stressful.  When I rebuilt my forks to chrome them I was pretty freaked out for a while!

I did some repair work to the cooling system on my Cooper last week and am finally getting over being hesitant to drive it and able to take my eyes off the temp guage and on the road.
