Flywheel Identification

So is there a difference between a 318, 340, 383 and 440 flywheel. I know there is a difference between the 360 and 400. I know the 360 is weighted. I also assume there is a difference because of the crank's, one being forged (318, 340, 440) and one being cast (360). I know the early 60's- bb440's were completely different. Does anyone know the difference?

318, 340, 383 and 440 (if its a forged crank) flywheels are all interchangable with the correct bellhousing.

ok the more i look into this the more im confused. So 1972-73 340 had a cast crank but a few are forged, how do you identify the cast crank vs forged with out tearing the engine down?

I know of no other way on the Small Blocks....

Any external balanced motor will have the offset balance on the balancer also.

With the prices of 340 Blocks gettin upwards of $1000.00, I wouldn't worry too much about the cast crank...Just find you a couple good 'ol steel cranks and rod sets out of early 318's and swap out the cast stuff if you need the steel crank for a 340...

Well after hours on the phone, on the web and parts house. You can identify the crank by the balancer, (thanks changin gears) the 340 is pretty easy to identify once you know what your looking for, there is a bell shaped weight on the front of it. As for the flywheel you can take a sb318 flywheel 130 teeth and have it drilled taking 18.5 oz out of it in a specific location on the flywheel. Or quite screwing around and spend $260 bucks and let brewers send you one!  :bricks1:
