Voltage Regulator Qustion...
« on: June 24, 2010 - 09:36:25 PM »
...how sensitive are they to being hooked up the "right way"?

Do they care about which way the voltage enters and exits?

Can they be destroyed if they are hooked up wrong, or are they robust enough to work if the wires are connect edeither way?

Thanks,

they simply connect the ground to power the alternator field But there is a 12 v power connection & a low voltage field ground , I doubt they would live with the connection reversed

Is there a way to test the voltage regulators with a multimeter to determine if they are still good?

Connecting it up in reverse could easily have damaged it as it would have been trying to connect battery voltage straight to ground.

It's cheap to try another and the worst that can happen is you'll have a spare.

I want to verify that I have things connected correctly.

I have battery voltage to the hot post on the alternator.  I have the center field spade getting excitor voltage.  I've tapped into the excitor voltage wire to feed the "IGN" terminal on the regulator (Higher of the two when mounted on the fire wall or passenger side terminal).  The "outside" spade field terminal goes to the "FLD" terminal on the regulator (the lower of the two when mounted on fire wall, or drivers side teminal) .  The regulator is grounded.

This should be correct based on what I've learned here.  All I've switched were the FLD spade terminal connectors at the alternator, but this should not make a difference.
