72 grill trim clips?
« on: April 05, 2010 - 11:30:09 PM »
On the 72 grill, there are the two large rings that are trim...one for each half of the grill....made of stainless or aluminum......they mount with 4 spikes that push through what I assume are clips of some sort....

Can someone give me a name on what to call these so I can try and find some?   seems that they are loose on my grill...almost lost one of the rings today!  :22yikes:

for now I put a glob of silicone on two of the spikes just to keep it from falling off...the grill is on the car so tough to see, but I think they are very small clips.

Anyone know?

Yeah those clips are tiny little square fellas.  Don't know where to get them.

I think the chrome trims should have six pins, not four.

The clips will hold it loose if the pins are worn.  On my car I used some short lengths of rubber tube with "gripfill" in them pushed on from the back - so far they are holding it nice and firm.

"Gripfill" is a filler/adhesive in a tube like a mastic sort of thing, it sets into a plastic.  It was the nearest thing to hand.

I decided to glue the tubes as extra insurance as I'm unlikely to need that trim off again and I figured the more secure it is the better.  If I do need it off I can easy cut the tubes away with a sharp knife .

The tube I used was much like you see for vacuum pipes in the engine bay, it has quite a thick wall and narrow inside so it goes on nice and tight.

As a followup --  I finally got around to painting my grill.

Found the cips on ebay and online, but ridiculously pricey so I guess I will try your rubber tube idea.....just have to find the right size I guess...do you recall the ID size by chance?

It was a couple mm or so.  As I say, like old shool vacuum accessory tubing.  I looked at mine the other day, it still seems tight on there.

Thanks...

I just ended up using a small glop of clear silicon on each one....seems to be holding fine so far.....
