wrong pitman arm?
« on: June 13, 2010 - 04:37:21 PM »
Today I`ve been putting the front end back together with all the new stuff I got a couple years ago from Mopars by Crane...( they were bankrupted last year)
All went fine till I got to the pitman arm.  different shape and the spline hole is bigger...  :faint:
The bag in which it came says it should be the right one though... so what`s wrong and what do I need?
Is the steering box correct for a 70 cuda?  what is the pitman arm for, if it`s not for my car?   I hate it when a pricey part won`t fit....  :P

That is the wrong one.  It is the easy to get 73-74 arm.

Wrong arm, but you can can use it if you use a 73-74 box (I like it better because it has the larger, stonger shaft).

ok thanks  :2thumbs:    I guess I`ll be looking for a 70-72 arm then... 73 box will be hard to get here.
I hate it when people ship the wrong parts to the other side of the planet.....  :(

Bart-
So sorry to hear that you have the wrong pitman arm.  I hope you can find the correct one.
Based upon this thread and your other one asking about torsion bars, I'm taking an educated guess that you're rebuilding the front suspension.

Can you please do us novices a big favor and take lots of pics and provide lots of inputs as to what went right and what went wrong for the whole build.  On things that went wrong, please explain any tricks and helpful hints on how you overcame that issue.

I appreciate your feedback.  I have a project on the garage to complete, then I'll be doing my front end.
- A branch fell through my roof over the garage.  I didn't know about it until after several storms when the garage ceiling was leaking on to the Cuda.  I had the roof repaired, now I'm fixing the ceiling.  The sheetrock is down, area cleaned up.  Hope to have the new sheetrock up by the weekend.

Anyway, Looking forward to your pics and helpful hints

Thanks
Ron

I rebuild the front end a few years ago and had it stored since then.  I was not planning on bolting that stuff back in the car till the motor was ready, but my workspace only allows one open door, so every now & then I have to turn the car around.  It`s getting too heavy for the dollywheels so I`m working on getting the front and rearend back on, and put some wheels on it.
I still need to replace a couple seals in the steeringbox and a new pitman arm for the front, and I need to make new bushings and clamps for the leafsprings to be able to get the dana back in.
I`ll update the thread with some new pics soon... other than a few "know how`s " and getting a ton of greasy crap out of the K-member, it`s a pretty straight forward job though.
