For Those With 440 Dual Quad Set-up
« on: June 14, 2010 - 07:47:49 AM »
For those that have experimented with this setup, did you find better performance with the carbs setup in the progressive fashion (running on rear carb until front carb kicks in based on linkage setup) or with the carbs setup in the 1:1 fashion (both carbs operating at the same time) ?

I recently bought a Cuda with a 440, Edelbrock Dual Intake and 2 Edelbrock 600 cfm carbs.  Previous owner has it set up to operate in the 1:1 fashion.  I'm wanting to try the progressive fashion but would like to glean any info, lessons learned, performance differences in the 2 setups etc. from those who have already experimented with the 2 different setups.  Thanks in advance for any info.

No my personal experience, but from tuning cars with this setup, the better street setup is generally progressive. Better fuel economy, better throttle response, and fewer tuning issues.

Thanks Supercuda.  With respect to setting it up progressive, what do I key in on initially to determine when to have the 2nd carb kick in??  My 440 is a mild street build with the Edelbrock Dual Intake, 2 Edelbrock 600 cfm carbs, FlowTech Headers, and a mild MOPAR Purple cam, and MOPAR Elec. Distributor.

Anyone else have any experienced inputs??

I don't have any experience but I am interested in this setup.....I may run this if I find it's cheaper than the 6 pack setup I've been dreaming of.

I do not have any tuning experience with an inline dual quads but do with crossrams and 6paks and I do like the progressive for the street best but I would think you would have to be careful not to lean any of the farthest cylinders away from the primary carb that you decide to use.
I think if I were to do this I would make the front carb the primary carb cause the primary circut of it would be closest to the center of the heads.
Hope this helps. :clueless:

One thing I can tell you is while I'm only running twin 625 Carter AFB's, you don't want to stomp on it with both carb's linked together in a NON progressive fashion...You kinda want to "Ease" into it...

I've found that running them NON progressively on the street seems to give ALOT better throttle response...If you run them like the stock HEMI and 1958, Dual quad 350 BB "Golden Commando" engines, you need to run the rear carb as the primary and then pull in the front carb progressively...

The nice thing about tuning the secondary opening rate is that you can use a larger carb without drowning the engine. Smaller carbs would work better, but 600s will do well enough. The rear carb should be your primary, as the front venturii will be closer to the middle of the engine, providing better mixture distribution. Dual carbs always have distribution issues, but proper tuning of the setup will provide excellent driveability. The Edelbrock progressive linkage is designed to tip in the front carb after about 10-20% throttle opening or so, and is fine as is for your street engine. A tip for tuning the setup without proper carb balance hats: use 2 vacuum gauges that read the same. Confirm that they are reading the same by first attaching each to the same carb. Then attach one to each carb, and adjust your idle mixture and speed screws until both read the same vacuum.
