Challenger fender turn signal location
« on: June 20, 2010 - 06:52:14 PM »
In an unrelated post in the new Challenger section, MEK-Dangerfield and I got into a discussion of where the proper location of the fender mounted turn signal indicators on '70 Challengers.  I thought it best to move the discussion to a more appropriate thread!
Any rate, here is where it left off in that thread. He said:
"I'll just say that my car came with the light group from the factory. Map light and all... But I hope this isn't a case where the dealers installed the fender turn signal indicators where ever they saw fit, but maybe.. "
Which is different than where the ones on my 11-69 SBD Challenger are located.
I looked through some vintage literature and the ones in the 1970 Challenger brochure are in the same location as where mine and the similar convertible in 2010rt's pictures.
Here are the pictures:
My car 20 years ago, pre restoration:

1970 Challenger brochure:

Also, here is a picture from an early in the model year Car Life magazine cover that shows the indicators in the same location:

Also, I have pictures of the convertible 11 VIN after mine and it has the indicators in the same location.
So I am confident mine are in the right place, however, the brochure and magazine pictures would be early production cars, my November car is fairly early, so is it possible that the fender indicator location was moved later in the model year?
Anyone know? :clueless:

unsure on this but my early model  72 has the same signal indicators as a 70 an 71 and are in the same location as MEK-Dangerfield so maybe they did change location but then again maybe flat hoods an rallye hoods changed the location were they are on the fenders  :clueless:

No fender top indicators on rallye hood 1970 or 1971 Challengers from the factory.

Mike's car is from the LA plant, & the one shown in the first photo is from Hamtramck, I wonder if it is a difference in the way the two plants did things?

Mike, got a photo of your fenders at the front with the hood up?

Barry,

I think you are on to something. If I don't have a photo to post now, I will tomorrow. Maybe each plant did something different.    :dunno:

I installed a 1970 fender from an LA car on a Hamtramck car once, it was a bugger getting it to fit. The holes in the top flange were farther forward, I had to elongate all of them to get it to work.

It may have been a fluke thing, but it sure made me wonder at the time............

That does help. I wanted to make sure you had 1970 fenders just to eliminate the possiblity of later versions from the equation.  ;)

I found a few more vintage pictures of '70 Challengers with the indicators located where mine are, and also found a picture of a '71 Challenger convertible that has them in the inboard location like Mike's.
So the mystery continues, was it a change made sometime during the production year, or did the 2 plants install them in different locations, and it was changed to the inboard location at the MI plant starting in '71?
