HELP! Lifter tapping in 440
« on: June 14, 2010 - 11:20:09 AM »
Guys:

My 440 has started a tapping noise on the left bank.  Cylinder 6 or 8.

I replaced those 4 lifters with new ones (old lifters looked like new) and the tapping went away for a awhile.

Well it's tapping again.  I checked to make sure I was getting plenty of oil to the rockers, which it is, so what else could it be ?

I don't think the cam is hurt cause the lifters looked like new, and the rocker were pretty tight.  Alitte side motion but not enough to make the loud tapping I am hearing.

Is there any way to check to see a cam lobe is damaged without actully removing the cam ??

Any help would be great ....

could be a bad lifter bleeding down or the lobe could be going away on the cam but the lifter would be damaged as well , you can remove the lifter & look at the lobe through the hole

If the face of the lifter has a nice circular contact pattern, and has a slight crown to the the face then this would strongly suggest the cam and lifters are ok.  Maybe the valve stem installed length was set a little too short on the valve in question, and it has taken this long (this much use) to finally show up.
Are incrementally longer pushrods available?   A pushrod about 0.02 - 0.040 longer would set the piston within the lifter a little lower, and the clatter sound will go away.

Well, I am going to completely swap the entire left bank rocker arm assembly and install 8 new lifters on that bank.

Hopefully that will eliminate the noise.

If the valve itself was too short, the problem should have presented itself the from the moment the engine was first ran.

I will post later
