I find it ironc that most folks prefer the 1971 grille over the others because....

it has quad headlights so it looks more like the Challengers from the front.

Just sayin'.  ;)

I tend to agree... to me the 71 isn't quite the same car...  maybe it's those four eyes.  What fish has four eyes?  :eek7:

Don't get me wrong... they are great looking cars... but they're like a rich cousin...   :money:

There is something more intimidating about the big bank of headlights and the crazy grille.

I always heard that most didn't like the 71 when it came out because it was too over the top.

Hell, when I started seriously considering a muscle car, I wanted a 68 Charger because the headlights were hidden and the grille was just a big blank space. Then I went 70 AAR style with the subdued black grille... then Challenger... then I finally settled on liking the 71 Cuda as my first car. I hated the grille at first.

Obviously I feel differently these days. ;)

Before Mopars I wanted a 70 Chevelle.

Next, I'm looking at vintage Japanese cars (mostly 71-72 Toyota Celicas and 67-74 Toyota Crowns), a couple of Datsuns (roadsters are cool), Honda S500/S600, early 70s Nissan GT-R, and I'm also somewhat interested in the old Volvo 122S (60s), both wagon and 2dr coupe.

My taste is pretty broad and can vary wildly from time to time.

Another thing that helps me tell the years apart are the side marker lights. 70-71 have a long thin marker while the 72+ cudas have a much wider and shorter one.  I'm like willhaven, when I first bought my car some 30+ years ago I thought the front end was kinda ugly.   :eek7:    Once I got it going again I have since changed my mind.     :ylsuper:    Just dumb luck that I ended up with a 71 cuda and kept it for this long.

I remember reading somewhere that the reason they went away from the quad headlights in 72 was simply because people complained

that it looked too much like the challenger in 71.   Strange the way things turn out that 71 cudas are now worth more than the other year cars !

It'll probably be a little while before I'm looking for another car. Months at best. It'd also have to be clean running and driving.

By 1971, Chrysler was in trouble. Their cars weren't selling. They decided to simplify the cars and reduce costs all of the way around. The 71 Cuda front end was very expensive. The grille consisted of 21 individual pieces and was the most expensive grille ever. Add to that the cost of four headlamps and the expensive turn signals and valance and you had a very expensive front end. The gills in the fenders added an extra expense as well. The side markers were very expensive since they consisted of a seperate bezel, reflector and lamp assembly times four. The 72 grille was one single casting with a couple of small trims and simple headlamp rings. The new valance insert included the castings for the turn signals and the bezels were cheap chrome plated plastic pieces. For 72 there were no more shaker setups, no big motors, no rear wings, no gills, no cast multi piece tail lights and new cheap one piece side markers that would be used on all Chrysler products. In fact the option list was just about empty.  It was the beginning of the end.
I own two 70's, two 71's and one highly modified 73, but my favorites are the 71's with the 70's close behind. My 73 is the best driving car of all though with a late model fuel injected 360 and overdrive transmission. With the cruise control set at 70, it gets 29 mpg on the freeway.
