« on: June 23, 2010 - 07:51:08 PM »
Will '' WATER WETTERS '' actually lower your water temperature???
My car is running a bit over 220 in traffic on these hot humid days. Will this stuff help?

How old is your radiator? Check for cold spots after running, hot engine off. Put your hand in between the fan and on the inside of the radiator.

Any cold spots? If so, it has clogged cooling fins. It either needs re-cored, rodded, or replacing.

Do you use the PURPLE ICE with water only? Or do you use it with a coolant/antifreeze mixture?

Water Wetter, of any variety, should help remove more heat from the engine as stated above.  The catch is that this heat is absorbed by the water and the water then will be hotter as it goes back to the radiator.  If the radiator/fan is not sufficient to transfer this heat to the air, you may not see a temperature decrease.

I would start with the radiator, fan, shroud end of the equation.  Many older radiators will have a lot of the tubes clogged or partially clogged.  Sometimes you can put your hand on the lower core and it will be colder than than the upper rows....means the lower ones are plugged up.

it could be a faulty theromstat as well as it should close to prevent water flow to give enough time to allow the water in the rad to cool before opening & swapping the water from the block

My MOPAR buddy thinks the fan is too far from the shroud to do it's job. I'll have a 1'' spacer to move the fan closer to the shroud tomorrow. I report the results.
 THANKS for the input!

I'm not sure what that means. This is the fan that came off my 318, it was an AC car. I put the 318 fan on the 340 stroker motor. Here's what she looks like on the 340 stroker......

Your fan looks like it is the right distance from the rad. If it is heating up at low speed then check the clutch operation or for the possible blocked rad tubes as mentioned earlier. The clutch should be harder to rotate when the engine is hot meaning that it will pull more air. If that is ok then the rad is suspect. I presume you have checked the simple things - rad cap, thermostat??

From the looks of the pic, it looks like a trans cooler is attached to the rad? If the rad is marginal at all then the reduced flow would also create an overheating condition.
If I cant fix it, it's broke

Just put a 1'' spacer on the fan.....That sucker should pull a little harder now.......

The Transmission cooler has been spaced about 2'' in front of the radiator to allow the radiator to flow enough..... I hope the tranny cooler is not too far away to get good flow. I just used 3/4'' hose as the spacer and let the cooler sit on the pan under the radiator. I used some foam blocks to protect it from rubbing on the pan.
