1st time clutch installation
« on: June 28, 2010 - 09:57:30 PM »
I am going to tackle a clutch for the 1st time. I have a brand new flywheel, clutch disk, pressure plate, throw out bearing and pilot bearing. I know the pilot bearing goes into the back of the crank. Then the flywheel, then clutch disk with alignment tool and then the pressure plate. I get a little fuzzy after that. I have a challenger with a 360 and e body 4 speed. I saw a video of a "chevy" clutch installation where they put everything (flywheel disk etc.) on and then bolted the bell housing to the block and then mated up the 4 speed. My ebody 4 speed has the threads in the transmission. So I wouldn't be able to start the bolts that attach the bell housing to the tranny because they start from the inside. Does the bell housing attach to 4 speed 1st before attaching it to the block?  if so, how would I install the throw out bearing?

Not sure why your bolt threads are in the tranny. Mine are in the bellhousing and the 4 bolts enter from outside and inserted forward into the bellhousing. You should be able to install the bell first. Bit of a pain getting the throwout bearing all sorted out as the tranny goes through the bell housing hole but I have a tranny jack and a 4 post hoist. But like I said, it is doable the way you described it.
Good luck

The Chevy install is basically the same as the MOPAR, the only trans that has the bolts inside the bellhousing are the autos, all the manuals I have seen have the bolts on the outside.   :working:
Don't forget to lube the spigot bush if you are using a bush.   :2thumbs:

O.K. everyone! I think it is time for me to go on a vacation. Either that or someone took my tranny and replaced it with the correct one. I looked at the tranny last night and the threads are in the bell housing and not the 4speed. I could have sworn that the threads were on the 4 speed, but oh well. Maybe I need glasses :dunno:
