Fuel line question
« on: July 18, 2010 - 01:58:40 PM »
First, should I go with braided line when I get ready for it? I'm looking at a 318 right now for real cheap. My car has no fuel lines at all, so I will be making them. I don't know if I should go with braid or stainless plumbing. Obviously I will have to buy a flaring tool if I go with plumbing.

Here's my second question though. The 318 is only temporary until I can build a big block for it, which will be quite a while down the road. I know the big block will need much more fuel than the 318, so what size lines am I looking at? I don't know anything about fuel systems yet, so I am very lost in this matter. Thanks for the help yall!

If your BB is gonna have some horsepower, then you would probably want 3/8 line. Overkill for the 318 but no reason not to use it now so when the BB goes in you don't have to change the lines again.
If I cant fix it, it's broke

If you have a 5/16" solid fuel line from the tank, going bigger up front will gain you nothing. Gotta be the same size all the way around.

I have a beefed up 440, and I have the 5/16" solid line, but I do have a Hi-Volume mechanical fuel pump. Things seem groovy so far. I do have an electrical fuel pressure gauge installed on my dash, so I can see I am not starved when I get into it.   :naughty:

So, unless you are looking at 500 HP or more, I think you are good.

Well I don't have a fuel tank right now either so I will most likely be putting a fuel cell in the trunk. So should I go with plumbing or braid line?

Plumbing would be much less expensive....If your not into bending your own the reproduction SS lines are not too pricey, guess you'd want them from a earlier model big block

3/8 " SS fuel line $99+S&H  http://www.inlinetube.com/   You could use your old stuff for a return line or get new SS for another $99.

The last time I priced out a braided hose kit vs formed steel lines there wasn't a big difference.  Its worth checking out.  I would go 3/8 even if you don't need it as the cost difference is low.

OK cool, thanks yall. One more question, do you have to have a return line or can you just go straight to the carb? I know FI engines need one, but they are quite different than a carb engine.

with most pumps you do not need a return line ,if you above 6 psi you often do need a return
