SB 4 barrel Kickdown linkage help
« on: August 02, 2010 - 07:00:32 AM »
This has stumped me for some time.
I have a 360 4 barrel SB with a single piece kickdown rod.
Every Challenger/Cuda image I see refers to a 3 piece, or  a Lokar kickdown cable.
Is there a way to make the kickdown rod I have work?

Pics of your setup would help immensely. (I am a visual person)
Here is what I have thusfar, and I know its not right.
The car bogs on acceleration, and sputters/backfires- which tells me the oil pressure  in the trans is not right (which could lead to trans problems) It idles nicely BTW- (Thanks Dave)

Thanks!
Dan

Dan your setup looks pretty good....you may need some carb tuning/timing adjustments.

From the Service Manual (short version)
Kickdown band adjustment  loosen jamb nut, run in adjuster then back out 2 1/2 turns.
Linkage adjustment... With choke disconnected or held open have someone hold the kickdown lever on the tranny all the way forward (or make tool with spring to hold). Loosen kickdown lever adjustment bolt, holding the lever back, adjust the slotted bar forward till is in contact with the carb. stud.

This is OE 340/727 '73

the bog usually has a lot to do with float level or not enough fuel being added by the accerator pump circuit .
the kick down should push the lever all the way back @ WOT  , there is no reason the one piece linkage cannot work , you may have to bend it slightly to be long enough or weld in an extension with a higher intake

You da man Wade!

Thanks for the pic w/measurements!
I found an image of my particular setup with the single rod kickdown ass'y.
I think I know how to make it happen.
BTW- My kickdown rod runs into the block, so I need to do some modification to make it right. I also need to get the washers and clips.
I'll post pics as soon as it's done!

This is the kick down on my 74 360, don't know how much it's been messed with but very different than my 73.

Here's how I did the 73, rod on the outside, much straighter that way?
With the high rise I extended the throttle cable & shortened the throw on the kick down.

SO after 2.5 hrs of bending and tweaking the kickdown rod to clear the block, the firewall, the headers, and the valve cover, I finally got this PIA to work.  :2thumbs:
I will refinish it when I have proven that it works properly.

One thing I noticed though, the pivot to the throttle slide did not equal 4"  :dunno:
The pivot was at TDC, and everything operated without interference.
Tell me what you think.

does anyone have any pictures of this on a 340 4SPD CAR?

I have just upgraded to a 650 edelbrock carb...& the last owner had the thermoquad rigged up with bolts
& nylock nuts which looked really "backyard"

So i need to figure out how its supposed to look.....

any and all help is appreciated!

There is no automatic transmission kickdown linkage on a 4 speed car  :2thumbs:

That is the measurement on my '73, may be irrelevant to other years & setups with non-OE components. 4-points I've come to understand from other posts, with throttle at rest you want the pivot straight up, the trannys lever all the way forward, the back of the slot just contacting the carb stud (this may require modifications often seen to adapt) & free movement to the wide open throttle position.

I have exactly 4" as Wade has said.  Pictures can help a lot, so here's mine.

This is my old TQ carburetor from last year, but the linkage is the same.
