345 Casting Cop Car Heads? Any Info? Worth it?
« on: July 30, 2010 - 12:40:32 AM »
I Have a run of the mill bone stock 70 318.  I also have a pulled apart 86(?) Cop Car 318 with the 345 casting heads and the 360 stamping.  Can i use these heads on my older 70 318?  Is it even worth doing? If so, I am pretty sure the cop car used larger pushrods but i am not sure if thats going to make a difference in swapping them, and there are rumors that the heads were swirl port even though they resemble all earlier open chamber designs, is there any truth to that?  I am hoping to wake up my little 318 with a new manifold, cam, headers and potentially these heads.  I am not looking to set any world HP records just make the car a little more fun to drive, since bone stock isnt cutting it haha

Cliff Notes:

1. What can you tell me about the 345 Heads
2. Are they worth swapping onto a 70 318 (with plans for cam, headers, and intake)
3. What would it take to swap them over? what would the new compression ratio be?

Thank you!

1] the 345 heads are just a std 360 head , nothing special , the later 88-92 heads with 308 casting # are swirl heads & worth using
2] In my experience they are not really worth the effort on a 318 , the 302 318 swirl casting should make more power then the 360 [345] casting
3] the heads will bolt on no issues , you are best to use a 360 intake to match the port size in both head & intake , rockers , pushrods & valave covers  will still work   , you will lose compression as the 360 heads have a bigger chamber than the 318 heads

I appreciate the reply! Since i already have them though would there be any benefit to swapping them from the stockers that are on there now? In terms of port sizes, valve sizes or flow?

Marginal , yes you get more flow but lower compression to go with it & if the heads needed to be rebuilt you are wasting you $$$
