Rear end CLUNK!?!?!?
« on: July 31, 2010 - 01:00:00 PM »
I went for a short drive this morning. I backed out of the drive way, then as I started moving forward, I heard a big clunk noise from the left rear axle. I drive about 5 miles and all was fine, then after I did a U (LEFT) turn, I heard it again....
Any idea what to look for?

jack up the car in the rear or put the car on jackstands . check u-joints visually then grab the drive shaft and try to move it un and down side to side looking for movement in the joint it self . check the rear shackle bushings for loose ness too roton loints ect . check exhaust mounting points too . after that if nothing is found , remove the rear tire and drums hold the axle with hands try to get ud and down play and side to side ---no more than 1/8 (wich is alot) --bill

Had the same noise coming from the 66 Charger, turns out that the lug nuts were loose.

The U bolts that hold the axle were not quite as tight as they ought to be.... They were not too bad, but we tightened them real snug and the noise is gone so far.
I went to the drag strip last night for the first time, that might have stretched a few things...
THANKS for help!

I made 3 passes, they were all 13.39. Two were at 103, the first was 104 mph. I really need to get a 3.91 pig, that 3.23 is way too high....
