« on: June 22, 2010 - 07:24:34 PM »
I have one remote mirror with decent chrome but a cracked lense, mirror on car is badly pitted but has good glass, is there a way to take em apart & change over the glass mechinism without breaking the glass? Rich.

Im not sure, but I think you have to break the mirror glass to remove it. But for around 15 bucks a glass shop would probably cut you one and install it. I had them do my 77 warlock power wagon on both sides. They charged me 25 bucks. Might just be the easiest way out.

I heard of a method but have never tested it, so best of luck if you try it......  :2cents:

Place a thick towel folded once over a wooden work bench.

Take mirror housing in hand, glass side down.

SLAM it into the towel / work bench. Repeat as needed & check to see if it is loose enough to pull out in between. The dowel pin will eventually release from the housing.

The guy that told me about it said he has not broken the mirror in one. Yet..........   :misbehaving:

I was sandblasting the chrome off of my mirrors and was wondering how to blast under the glass. I thought that I would have to break the mirror to get to the screws back there. Thanks for the tip Barry. I might try that on my junk mirror before slamming my better mirrors into my bench.

Videotape it if you can? I am still skeptical but I would love to know if the 'inertia press' really works.

The theory sounds plausible, but knowing for sure would be great.

You said screws, I just noticed. The procedure I mentioned was for 1970 mirrors, they have no screws holding the mirror frame.

No, it doesn't work on '71 mirrors.  There is a ball and socket style mount that has to be unscrewed by taking off the glass first.  I slammed it HARD about 10 times yesterday, then realized that I know better than your guy and I'm not going to slam a good mirror one more time.

Now I read that it is for '70 mirrors........

That's funny, because I knew that this wouldn't work but was slamming my mirror anyway.

I'll have to check it out this weekend, there's 2 philips head screws up from the bottom, maybe just for the cable but it's worth a look, otherwise 7 years bad luck for breaking a mirror! :22yikes: Rich.

 From my resto thread:

I have chrome mirrors so this car will have painted mirrors so I used my $8 heat gun to geat up the glue, carefully pried out the mirror, then it popped right off.  You can now see that it was only glued on these 4 corners.

I suggest that you get the housing and mirror VERY HOT before you pry off the glass.

I ground down the pits then sandblasted them inside and out then etch-primed them.  All I need now is a little filler for the tiny pits, then another coat of primer.
