71 gilled fender into 70 (will it fit)
« on: August 09, 2010 - 10:06:56 AM »
I recently acquired a 70 barracuda and I wanted to put the gills in it like they did on muclecar tv but I'm pretty sure I would warp the metal with my booger welding techniques. So I went to order the 71 fenders and the vendor said the 71 fender will not mount directly to the 70 body and will create major headlight problems? is this so and if it is maybe I will have to cut in those inserts from Tony's? Any input on this is appreciated.
BTW I scored a southwest 70 BH code 318 complete it even runs. I'm thinking of the late model hemi swap like they did on muscle car tv and swap out the body panels with the cuda versions and paint it sublime with billboards saying HEMI! or the easy way is to keep it stock and just freshen it up with  body patches paint and interior - thanks again

:wave:hm,-71 had 4 headlights and -70 2.maybe you could just change over the headlight mounting buckets between/from your 70 fenders to the repro 71,s.it should be harder to spot warped steel and booger welds behind there :bigsmile:do a search for similar threads,im sure ive red about stuff like that here somewhere. :2thumbs:

You should be able to drill out the spotwelds in your 70 fenders head light brackets and weld the brackets to the inside of the aftermarket 71 fenders.  Everything else should be the same.  The aftermarket fenders fit pretty good after you spend some time lining them up.  See pic below...

There are a few people out there that will stamp your 70 fenders into 71's.
Not sure where but I have info for a guy in washington or idaho I think.
There is a man in PA that does the stamping also.

Does your 70 bh have an M46 in the fender tag readout?   :smokin:

I put the '71 fenders on the '74... should be the same thing.
Kept the 74 front grill and the one per side headlight.

1st the headlight bucket could use 1 of the existing holes, and misses 2 others

I then used a piece of sheet metal to pick up the 2 other holes, and traced out where the bucket was in relationship

Then welded the bucket to my plate

Turned out pretty good

I REALLY like the gilled fenders, my originals were spent, and this was a good fit for me.

Plus, got 'em from Dave at Roseville, it was great to meet him and see the Dealership.
