Air conditioning help needed
« on: May 10, 2010 - 02:36:35 AM »
Hi all, I've just bought a near complete second hand air conditioning set of gear for Gloria. She was originally an a/c car and has the firewall plumbing and the interior stuff but I'm not sure if it will run or not. She's a 383 with 727 auto. What I'd like to see is a few pics showing me the engine bay with the compressor mounted and the general layout of the hoses etc. The bits missing include the alternator bracket and the crank pulley (not sure how many slots it needs). I will also have to buy new lines. Could you take a look at the pics and see if you can see anything else that may be missing? Thanks

I hope that you got all of the brackets and pulleys with that setup.  I'll have to get you some pics of mine. I added factory air to my non-air R/T a long time ago. I posted them here for a member around 2005 and wasn't using photobucket at the time so the pics are long gone or inside my stack of old hard drives.

On a big block, it uses a huge 4 groove crank pulley. 1st one goes to an idler and the waterpump. the idler is bolted to a funny looking double spacer that is held on to the water pump with longer bolts. Did you get and idler and spacer?

The second belt goes to the power steering pump and it may use special brackets to line it up.

3rd and 4rth belts, got to the alternator and A/C compressor. Alternator uses a metal plate that bolts to the head and raises the mounting point up and inch. This is only used on 383 and 400s.  440s don't use it. The lower alternator bracket is also unique. It's a big piece that mounts to the water pump and on the block.

You better lay all this stuff out to see what you have. The guys that take off the A/C stuff sometimes just take off the compressor and lines then rig up their alternator, PS and WP in goofy ways, just to work, keeping some of the parts that you will need.  Maybe you can trade him your stuff?

That's really helpful thanks. I know I have to buy / find an alternator bracket and the big pulley but I think I have that sorted. Thankfully the guy I got the stuff off was careful so I have the spacer and the idler. I'll take some more pictures too and then you can see what I've got so far.
