73 Challenger with a 340
« on: August 17, 2010 - 09:26:19 AM »
Friend (non-mopar guy) asked me about a Craigslist ad for a all original 74 Challenger with a 340.  Guy wants $22,000.  I told him that they did not put a 340 in a Challenger after 72, and at that, $22,000 is way too much for any original '74 Challenger.

So we emailed the guy calling him out, and he replied with a note that it is a '73, that he incorectly stated the year.  Of course he thanked us for pointing out his error.   At this point I told him to stay away from this deal, but am I wrong in that 72 was the last year for the 340?

I've heard that before but have never seen proof.  Also the 74's were supposed to have larger bumper guards but I've seen a lot of them that don't.

Unless there's some gold plating somewhere, $22k sounds awfully high to me.

I have a neigbor that has a 72 with the big bumper guards... I figured it was a 73 he was claiming to be a 72.  After running the numbers, we found it to be a true 72.

I figure it to be a ... late model 72? its the only 72 I ever saw with guards

The difference between '73 and '74 bumper guards is in the rubber.  The '74 used a thicker rubber bumper guard.

I know, but what I'm saying is that I've seen a good deal of 74's with the 73 rubbers.

It is a family car, and his word seams good.  No pics and the car is garage kept.  Plus he took them off a while back.  you can see where they were, but they have been removed.  I thought a bumper may have been replaced, but they were on front and rear... kinda odd.  I saw a you tube for a 72 "original" it looked the part with wear, it also had  guards and fillers....claimed it to be a 72 even on the car show display tag.

I don't think they reproduce the '74 rubber (with good reason), so it could have been replaced with the '73 rubber.
